All 24 Los Angeles Black-Owned Coffee Shops, By Neighborhood

hen house cafe

Customers can choose from to-go goods and grab-and-go bottles of house-made cold brew, or take a patio seat to take in the funky, fun spaces with pastries, brunchy bites and retail items. Try the almond and macadamia milk cappuccino. Formerly a private home, Aroma Coffee & Tea Company transformed itself into a darling café where you can grab a coffee, slice of cake or full-on meal. The expansive coffee and tea menu caters to everyone, from the espresso lover to the chai-latte enthusiast. Inside the cafe, a library-like atmosphere—complete with fireplace—makes it feel like you’re chilling at home, while outside is more casual with a back patio and some tables on the front sidewalk.

Attari Sandwich Shop/Attari Grill

The shop carries unique home goods, personal accessories and (of course) a few crystals, with a colorful exterior floral display that brightens up its busy traffic-prone stretch of Lincoln Boulevard every day of the week. Of course, Flowerboy Project’s simple drink menu incorporates florals, with excellent lavender and rose lattes that would change any skeptic’s opinion about consuming flowers. Well for Mad Lab, one of Downtown's top roasters, the name says it all. At the Hollywood window, simply stroll up and order from the menu or let whoever's behind the counter whip something up special for you while you nosh on fresh Clark Street pastries. Is a city constantly on the move, even if it's only at a glacial pace on the freeway. Coffee, and lots of it, preferably paired with a quick breather at one of the city's best coffee shops.

In Inglewood, gentrification and a post-SoFi stadium sea change in the community makeup remain ongoing points of contention and debate. Bridging the gap is Inglewood’s Sip & Sonder, a Black woman-owned cafe that opened in 2017, with a second Downtown outpost at the Music Center. Owners Shanita Nicholas and Amanda-Jane Thomas, who previously worked in law, chose their cafe’s location carefully, intending to represent their community and fill a gap in Inglewood’s neighborhood coffee needs. The cafe also doubles as a recording studio and local event space. Know of or already love and support a Black-owned coffee shop in L.A. Verve Coffee Roasters

Brunch, when omelettes and French toast galore get shuttled out of the kitchen to chic Valley dwellers. This Long Beach coffee roaster and café is proudly queer Black- and Latina-owned—the product of two women who left corporate jobs to provide fresh, high-quality coffee to every kitchen and increase the visibility of women of color in the specialty coffee industry. While the fully plant-based coffee shop is only open on Sundays for now, Scary Good Coffee also sells bags of single-origin specialty coffee and house blends every day of the week online. The Playa Vista coffee stand features plenty of open-air and outdoor seating, while the larger Santa Monica outpost sports a more modern look with plenty of indoor tables. This charming Historic Filipinotown café offers all-day fare that's worth lingering over—already an easy feat, given the free Wi-Fi and creative coffee there, too.

We were having the third of our day’s seven meals — eight if you count a final stop for ice cream — at Attari Grill, an Iranian restaurant in Westwood. The restaurant is the lesser-known adjunct to popular sibling Attari Sandwich Shop; they face each other across a courtyard where customers linger at tables shaded by colorful umbrellas, and they serve similarly meaty menus and grab-and-go foods. Great food at fair prices and great service! The quality of service is nothing short of outstanding which is hard to come by these days, great place. Location & Contact

Run by husband-and-wife pair Laurent “Lou” and Karima Correa, this weekend-only Burbank coffee shop, patisserie and sandwich spot has been serving the Valley since 2016. All pastries, from seasonals to Lou’s wonderfully flaky daily croissant, are made using organic milk, eggs and produce, as well as French butter. The shop’s traditional espresso-based drinks also use organic milk as well, with an artisan tea selection larger than most neighborhood coffee shops. Note that the tiny storefront doesn’t have much in the way of seating, aside from a few patio tables outside—making it a better choice for takeaway drinks and snacks. Endorffeine isn’t your cutesy, sun-dappled, Instagram-driven coffee shop—not that there isn’t a place for those, especially in L.A.

Pinkies up! 15 of the best spots to sip high tea like a royal

Hilltop’s Eagle Rock location offers high-quality coffee and tea—including a delicious lavender latte—and a simple all-day menu of pastries, grain bowls, sandwiches and “droptops” (fully loaded toasts). Powdery beignets and weekend-only waffles round out the café’s food items, with many items on the menu substantial enough for a full-on meal. Located on the ground floor of an apartment building, Hilltop Eagle Rock’s minimalist interior and small outdoor patio area make it an excellent spot for Northeast L.A. Super Domestic's larger Washington Boulevard sister spot, Mañana Coffee, also sells a bevy of plants and other assorted artisan goods. Both coffee shops roast their own beans and make all alternative milks and syrups in-house, for quality you can taste in every sip.

In a city full of amazing coffee shops, L.A.’s Black-owned cafés stand out from the rest for a couple of few distinct reasons. In addition to brewing high-quality java, many of them explicitly center on Blackness and L.A.’s Black community. Some serve as art galleries and local event spaces, and others regularly partner with local and international nonprofits to further give back. Others are more straightforward operations dedicated to crafting your daily cup of joe—with one that even doubles as an excellent delivery service in Downtown L.A. Do you live within delivery distance of Downtown L.A.? Boketto Cold Brews wants to bring you or your office an excellent cup (or keg) of cold brew nitro coffee and tea. Founder Benjamin Westley—who also operates Boketto as a pop-up catering business—also offers retail bags of vacuum packed espresso and loose leaf tea and a small, everyday food menu.

The Tea House on Los Rios

Oh, remember that it would be very impolite to mention the Bears in anything other than a disparaging way. Our pick among the larger, older-guard Westwood kebab houses. Helou’s inquisitiveness seemed to irk our surly server, who disappeared for long stretches, but he couldn’t diminish our appreciation of the cooking. Chefs tend the flames and the skewers behind a glassed-in grill; this is a fine place to splurge on pricier cuts of meat such as rack of lamb kebab. The menu, like the dining room, sprawls, so it is wise to zero in on the several specials available only a few days a week. It’s worth stopping by on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for tahchin, a savory rice cake mixed with yogurt and egg, layered with chicken or lamb, baked and crowned with crimson barberries.

The best of the best that Wisconsin has to offer. The service is polite, quick, and efficient. The food is tasty and perfectly prepared. If you are looking for 'bougie' - this is not your place but you would still be very welcome. The baked goods are freshly prepared and delicious. If you can, steak and eggs is the house special.

Small-batch, seasonal pastries like passion fruit pie with graham cracker crust; pecan and caramel coffee cake; and blackberry rhubarb galettes are so good you won't want to share, and go great with pour-over coffee and specials like vanilla-and-orange cappuccinos. A casual menu of rice bowls, breakfast sandwiches and toasts should do the trick, and if you want to bring the magic home, Doubting Thomas has its own blend of beans—as well as house-made concentrates for matcha, chai and beyond—which you can buy on-site. For caffeine purists, we've also included more minimalist spots that will happily sate any coffee nerd. To help you find the perfect brew, we’ve sipped our way through the best spots in town—check out our guide, refuel and get back out there. Equal parts coffee, flower and gift shop, this laidback Venice café offers Westside locals gorgeous floral arrangements with a side of coffee.

As of late, South LA Cafe has also served as a site for free Covid testing and boosters. For the casual walk-in customer, you’ll find delicious pastries and a selection of hot and cold caffeinated drinks, but South LA Cafe’s extended community involvement more than reflects the fact that coffee shops aren’t solely just places to work and grab some java. In a big way—especially in its new-ish Arts District location, a 7,000-square-foot, two-story café and coffee roastery that's now the L.A. The all-day menu here features a flexible kind of global cuisine, not to mention a handful of truly good coffee-based mocktails exclusive to that space.

They also offer fresh pastries and breakfast burritos, just in case all that caffeine isn't fuel enough. Located in Woodland Hills, Tang and Java is a Black- and Filipina-run gelato and coffee shop founded by a pair of friends in 2021. Inside the tiny strip mall spot you’ll find a sleek, modern interior with plenty of tables and counter seating. Tang and Java’s specialty gelato flavors feature uniquely L.A. Creations like the Ole Ole, a mango sorbet topped with chamoy, tamarind candy and Tajin, while the drinks menu goes beyond standard coffee and tea with fruity iced drinks and several choices of non-sugar sweeteners. The woman-owned shop uses beans from L.A.-based Cafecita Coffee, which works exclusively with organic, women-run coffee farms.

Animal House film

john belushi animal house

John Belushi was an actor and comedian, one of the first performers on Saturday Night Live and one half of the Blues Brothers. Known for his legendary characters and sketches on Saturday Night Live, Belushi imbued his brilliant performances with a manic, boisterous energy that has never seen before or since. He died due to an accidental overdose on March 5, 1982, at L.A.'s Chateau Marmont. The talents of director John Landis and Saturday Night Live's irrepressible John Belushi conspired to create a rambunctious, subversive college comedy that continues to resonate.

And a man whose personal cracks were inevitably widened by the money, pressure and excesses that accompanied becoming, for a few short years, the biggest star in – and best buddy of – America. But as Belushi found fame, he also found himself deeper in the throes of addiction. Not unlike his Animal House counterpart Bluto, Belushi’s lifestyle thrived on alcohol, drugs, and a revolving cast of enablers who recognized that when Belushi was intoxicated, he was fun. On March 5, 1982, he overdosed while speedballing (a mix of heroin and cocaine) at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont hotel.

Movie News & Guides

A Blues Brothers movie was green-lit before Ackroyd had even written his monstrous 324-page script, but it proved a mixed blessing for Belushi. Cinematically the 1980 film remains his finest hour, as Jake and Elwood chase the spirit of the blues around Chicago with the police, country rednecks and Nazis on their tail. “John inserted himself into practically every sketch in a two-hour show,” National Lampoon editor Tony Hendra said in Belushi, recalling his 1972 trip to Chicago to check John out for a potential role in the magazine’s off-Broadway Woodstock pastiche Lemmings. The resounding success of Animal House was more than just a steppingstone in the career of John Belushi.

Prior to the movie, Belushi was a regular on "Saturday Night Live." He has since released a double-platinum album with The Blues Brothers and focused on making movies. "Animal House" first premiered on July 28, 1978, and has been claimed to be an inspiring film that left an impact on comedy and movies. Over three decades ago the University of Oregon tried, unsuccessfully, to hide its participation in Animal House.

"His death scared a whole group of show-business people. It caused a big exodus from drugs," Williams told Entertainment Weekly. "Hollywood was toxic to him. People wanted him to be the Belushi they'd seen on screen," said Michaels in the same article. Only in a small part, he appeared in the western flop Goin' South with Jack Nicholson and Mary Steenburgen. The next year, he took on a serious role in Old Boyfriends with Talia Shire, which failed to find an audience.

The Blood in ‘Psycho’s’ Shower Scene Was Actually Chocolate Syrup

Filming Stephen Spielberg’s 1979 wartime comedy turkey 1941, he’d go awol or injure himself falling from the wings of planes. And when he was in Chicago filming The Blues Brothers, all of his old networks of contacts reopened, the cast and crew were awash with drugs and everybody in town wanted to palm Bluto a bag of blow in a handshake, just to see how wild he’d get. Animal House was the first film produced by National Lampoon, the most popular humor magazine on college campuses in the mid-1970s.[12] The periodical specialized in satirizing politics and popular culture. Many of the magazine's writers were recent college graduates, hence its appeal to students all over the country. They made their debut in 1973's National Lampoon's High School Yearbook, a satire of a Middle America 1964 high school yearbook. Kroger's and Pepperidge's characters in the yearbook were effectively the same as their characters in the movie, whereas Vernon Wormer was a P.E.

Bluto’s motivational speech, spoken with true ignorance, takes on the gravitas of historical urgency – without any real information or plan. Bluto’s frat brothers roll their eyes, content to let the animal man tire himself out. One by one, the college students are roused until they are charging out the door, ready to take on the whole campus. Beyond Animal House, Bluto’s zealous monologue has become a viral movie clip in its own right.

A potential career as a serious theatre actor was short lived; as a high-school graduation present, Belushi was taken to a show at Chicago’s Second City, an early improvisational comedy venue where Joan Rivers had earned her spurs. “When he walked out of the theatre that night it was as if a light had gone on in his head,” Judy wrote in her 2005 oral history of his life, Belushi. A new film about John Belushi is currently in the works and the cast appears to be star-studded.

Nicole Kidman’s Daughters Make Their Red Carpet Debut at AFI Life Achievement Award Gala

At the market, Pinto meets a young cashier named Clorette and invites her to the party, while Otter flirts with an older woman, who turns out to be Wormer's alcoholic wife, Marion. During the toga party, at which Otis Day and the Knights perform, Otter seduces Marion, while Pinto and Clorette make out until she passes out, drunk. Pinto resists the temptation to rape her and instead takes her home in a shopping cart. He later discovers that she is the 13-year-old daughter of Carmine DePasto, the town mayor. In the fall of 1962, Faber College freshmen Larry Kroger and Kent Dorfman seek to pledge a fraternity. Larry and Kent are accepted as Delta pledges and given fraternity names "Pinto" and "Flounder," respectively.

According to Bob Woodward’s 1984 Belushi biography Wired, over the coming days of almost non-stop drug taking, Belushi fell in with Cathy Smith, an ex-partner of various members of The Band and Gordon Lightfoot who had turned to dealing heroin to the likes of The Stones and Hollywood figures. At Belushi’s request, Smith introduced him to speedballs – a mixture of cocaine and heroin – and administered 11 shots to him over the course of two and a half days. After The Blues Brothers wrapped, however, the death of his grandmother Nena gave John the jolt he needed to admit to his problem. He agreed to hire a former Secret Service operative named Smokey, who had helped the Eagles’ Joe Walsh stay clean, to break his habits. Initially the pair played cat and mouse games, as Smokey swept toilet cubicles and conducted pocket searches to confiscate gram after gram being slipped to Belushi, and John continually tried to give him the slip.

The outlandish comedy had crazy car chases, neo-Nazis and nearly everything else but the kitchen sink in it. The film also featured several musical cameos by such talented recording artists as Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway and James Brown. Before one SNL show, after a night out with The Rolling Stones, Belushi’s lungs began filling with fluid and he barely made it onto the set (he’d quit the show soon afterwards).

Some of his most famous characters were a sword-wielding samurai, a killer bee and a cone-headed alien named Kuldroth. Belushi also continued making fun of the famous with hilarious takes on the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Henry Kissinger, Truman Capote and William Shatner. While he was on Saturday Night Live, there were many stories going around about rampant drug use by the members of the cast. To deal with pressures and his own insecurities, Belushi is said to have done cocaine and other drugs. The film's significant cultural impact can be seen across many college campuses in the United States. At Harding University, a private Christian university affiliated with the Churches of Christ, Titans Men's Social Club refuses to put on a spring formal for its members.

For his next project, Belushi became active behind the scenes and wrote the screenplay for Noble Rot. In the months leading up to his death, he was reportedly spending about $2,500 a week on his habit, according to People magazine. Belushi was traveling back and forth between his home in New York City and California to work on the script in 1982. During the final week of his life, Belushi rented a bungalow at the Chateau Marmont, a popular hotel for the Hollywood set. On the night of March 4, 1982, he was reportedly partying with the likes of Robin Williams. Only thirty-three years old, he died from a drug overdose of a combination of cocaine and heroin, also known as a "speedball." The woman who was with him and had supplied him with drugs, Cathy Smith, was questioned by the police and released.

University President William Beaty Boyd instructed Director of University Relations Muriel Jackson to negotiate with the studio, and an agreement was signed on October 4 to allow filming on campus in return for $20,000 and a commitment that the university not be identified in the film. The cast of comedy classic 'Animal House' have pursued careers in acting, directing and producing since the film's release 40 years ago. Fully abandoning any formal credo leaves a person with the options to despair or embrace it, and the Deltas advance the latter choice to its sloppy logical conclusion. Fat, drunk and stupid may be no way to go through life, but it certainly takes the edge off. They rebel against a world they want nothing to do with through partying, insulating themselves from the mellow-harshing responsibilities of adult life by remaining in college indefinitely.

Instead, the men of Titans choose to celebrate an event called "TOGA" which is heavily inspired by the iconic toga concert from the movie. In the 1980s, it was difficult for Titans to throw a Valentine's Day function because the vast majority of members were busy attending Valentine's Day functions put on by the Women's Social Clubs on campus. In a stroke of genius, the Titans administration decided to celebrate Groundhog Day rather than Valentine's Day. Over time, the Groundhog Day party evolved into the famous TOGA banquet and concert it is today.

The constant news ticker of atrocities running over the past couple of years has left many Americans withdrawn while far from apathetic. An exhaustion with the status quo split both major political parties into pieces, and gave way to candidates pushing further to the left and right than ever before. An unexpectedly expansive faction of voters moved away from the two-party system entirely, united in their inability to find any figure worth their support in the establishment. Anti-establishment-ism just so happens to be the one principle that Animal House dares to get behind. The Deltas are staunch in their opposition to every form the Man might take, from a humorless dean to the local authorities. It doesn’t take much of a stretch for a viewer in 2018 to find some satisfaction in a film that offers personal pleasure as the primary act of resistance against a world of assorted bullshit.

Jerry Seinfeld Brings Back Classic ‘Seinfeld’ Characters, Takes Jab at ‘Friends’ in Promo for His Pop-Tarts Movie

The film’s signature song “Shout,” originally recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1959, became so popular that DeWayne Jessie, who lip-synced the song in the movie, started an act and is still touring today as “Otis Day." One of the movie’s most iconic scenes, the food fight, is just three seconds long. Unconcerned, the Deltas organize a toga party, recruiting Pinto and Flounder to shoplift party supplies from a supermarket.

At 30, Belushi was a millionaire taking private jets to a summer home in Martha’s Vineyard, one of few performers ever to hit the top of the music, movie and TV worlds at the same time, and undeniably the biggest star of 1978. It was a cruder, more neanderthal version of Belushi’s own character, then, that was written into Animal House for him. Onscreen, the ultimate slob, but offscreen, despite exhausting commutes between Oregon and NYC to maintain his SNL schedule, Belushi drove the film, forging a band-of-brothers camaraderie on set and giving Bluto a sense of party hero nobility. His attempts to cheer up Stephen Furst’s weeping Flounder by sweetly crushing a can against his forehead was, friends claimed, the closest to Belushi’s true nature ever captured on film. In 1978, Universal’s film division president, Ned Tanen, was in a rage about the not-yet-released Kennedy-era comedy. He was particularly livid over a scene in which white fraternity brothers and their sorority dates feel threatened by a roadhouse full of African-Americans.

Universal Studios also made agreements with two fraternities to use their houses, located just off campus in the 700 block of East 11th Avenue. The Eugene Half-way House, between the two fraternity houses, became the derelict Delta fraternity house. City officials in Cottage Grove, twenty-three miles south of Eugene, agreed to close down Main Street for three days to allow filming of the climactic homecoming parade scene.

Matheson, also cast as a student, was already a seasoned actor, having appeared in movies and television since the age of 13. New York, 1978, and packed houses of cinema-goers roared in amazement as the riotous toga party on screen almost burst into the aisles. National Lampoon’s Animal House was well on its way to becoming the highest grossing comedy film to date. And as this bawdy college rampage of flying beers, clumsy sex and ancient Greek wardrobe malfunctions reached its hedonistic peak, its star, the Saturday Night Live comedian John Belushi, would run from the back of the cinema to the screen, lead the audience in a rousing chant of “Toga! While on Saturday Night Live, the two of them developed a blues parody act known as the Blues Brothers.

Belushi played the feral 24-hour whiskey monster Bluto in Animal House and he had secretly toured the city’s picture houses in opening week to witness the excitement around the film firsthand and up the ante. Bluto was the anarchic party animal incarnate, a boorish, semi-articulate slob described by the movie’s director John Landis as part Harpo Marx, part Cookie Monster. Belushi died just four years later, 40 years ago this week, aged 33 from an overdose of cocaine and heroin in a bungalow at LA’s Chateau Marmont, after years of battling hard drug addiction.

In late October, fifty-five cast and crewmembers arrived at the Rodeway Inn in nearby Springfield. John Belushi, who was gaining fame on the television show Saturday Night Live, was the star of the film. The other well-known actor was Donald Sutherland, who had a small part as an English professor. The cast included several young actors—Karen Allen, Tom Hulce, Tim Matheson, and Kevin Bacon—some of them appearing in their first film roles. “The Blues Brothers went from hobby to obsession to national phenomenon in less than a year,” Ackroyd said; the album went platinum in a week and hit Number One in America en route to 3 million sales. That’s just as Animal House was breaking box office records and, with 20 million viewers, and SNL was the biggest late-night show on American TV.

Zack Norman, Actor in ‘Romancing the Stone’ and Henry Jaglom Films, Dies at 83

After injecting him with one last speedball and checking he was sleeping okay despite making choking noises, Smith left him snoring loudly at 10.15am. Around two hours later, Belushi’s fitness trainer Bill Wallace found him dead. He took up training and karate and his Martha’s Vineyard hideaway became a healthy and happy haven from temptation. At the 1981 wrap party for his next movie Continental Divide, a well-received romantic comedy he hoped would broaden his scope as an actor, he was handed eleven vials of cocaine and flushed them all.

It left many under the impression that he and Bluto were virtually one and the same. But while his breakthrough big screen role undoubtedly drew on the actor’s hard-partying, sleep-when-I’m-dead attitude, it belied the depths and subtleties of this complex comic legend. Of the younger lead actors, only the 28-year-old Belushi was an established star, but even he had not yet appeared in a film, having gained fame as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, which was in its third season in the autumn of 1977. Several of the actors who were cast as college students, including Thomas Hulce, Karen Allen, and Kevin Bacon, were just beginning their film careers.

Wormer organizes a kangaroo court led by the Omegas, which revokes the Deltas' charter and confiscates the contents of their house. Otter, Boon, Pinto, and Flounder take a road trip in Flounder's brother Fred's borrowed Lincoln Continental. They arrive at Emily Dickinson College, an all-girls institution, where Otter poses as Frank, the fiancé of a recently deceased student named Fawn Liebowitz to find dates for himself and the others. They stop at a roadhouse bar where Otis Day and the Knights are performing, unaware that the clientele is exclusively Black. Some of the patrons intimidate the Deltas into abandoning their dates and fleeing. John Vernon played Dean Vernon Wormer in "Animal House" and later acted on Broadway's "The Royal Hunt of the Sun" and in the films "Topaz" and "Dirty Harry."

There will be riots across America,’” the director John Landis recalled in a recent interview. Filming began on October 24, 1977, and concluded in the middle of December 1977.[1] and Landis brought the actors who played the Deltas up five days early to bond. Belushi and his wife Judy rented a house in south Eugene to keep him away from alcohol and drugs;[13][24] she remained in Oregon while he commuted to New York City for Saturday Night Live.

Belushi fans wanted him to see him return to a Bluto-like character, not in a dramatic part. The film was loosely based on a historical incident when a Japanese submarine was off the West Coast after the attack at Pearl Harbor. Belushi played a manic National Guard pilot, who along with some other concerned citizens, including an overeager tank sergeant played by Aykroyd, tries to protect a California small town under siege from the Japanese. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was a complete flop and received numerous bad reviews.

Despite Neighbors flopping at the box office, Belushi’s movie future remained bright. He was set to star as Ignatius J Reilly in an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Confederacy of Dunces, and Ackroyd was writing a central part for him in his new script, Ghostbusters. But amid Hollywood wrangles over his next $2 million project, and with $2,500 a week set aside purely for drugs, his mood darkened, and his abusive rages and wild behaviours intensified. In New York he began dragging friends to darker and seedier places on desperate drug hunts, until they stopped answering his 3am calls. Premiering on October 11, 1975, Saturday Night Live featured nine talented comedians boldly going where television had not gone before. Along with Belushi, there was Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman and Gilda Radner.

This spacious and stylish coffee destination is busy no matter the time of day—no surprise, seeing as it’s one of Highland Park’s top shops to grab a cup and a croissant, now with a second location in Downtown L.A.'s Fashion District. The original location's tall ceilings, tiled floors and diverse seating options spread between tables, couches and a patio out back make for a fashionable setting, while the toasts, breakfast burritos, and Sugarbloom Bakery pastries make for a solid meal. The espresso blend rotates frequently, but teas and specialty coffee drinks remain more or less the same. We love the Figueroa, made with sweetened condensed milk, espresso, milk and cinnamon, topped with a Maria Cookie.

The Cat & Fiddle Pub & Restaurant

Regal and enigmatic, but also kind and slyly mischievous, she strikes a singular presence. She has an extraordinary head of undulating silver hair, like ripples in a pond on a sweltering day when the air above also shimmers in waves. She has many on-the-spot inquiries for servers and owners — about how much oil the kitchen uses for the crispy rice, about where in Iran the owner is from and how long she’s been in America, about the proper consistency of ab-goosht (more on that later). People readily answer the questions; her stately, inquiring disposition usually prompts a few questions of their own. We both wanted to better grasp the city’s Iranian American culture by scaling mountain after saffron-peaked mountain of rice, wading through every possible herbaceous stew and devouring as many different kinds of kebabs as we could find.

Locations are available for takeout and online pre-order. Go Get Em Tiger is the growing coffee empire by Kyle Glanville and Charles Babinski, a duo whose original G&B Coffee stall just so happens to be its own staple at Grand Central Market. With eight locations currently running throughout the city, Go Get Em Tiger has fast become a hometown chain with consistency, but with enough charm and nuance at each outpost to keep things fresh.

A guide to L.A.’s Black-owned coffee shops, by neighborhood

In 2018, Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan first opened in the historically Black neighborhood of View Park-Windsor Hills, hoping to help locals connect, caffeinate and continue the climb towards success. Since then, after being featured on HBO's Insecure, the coffee shop is now backed by showrunner Issa Rae, who's helped Hilltop expand to Inglewood, Eagle Rock and Downtown. And Eagle Rock locations have plenty of tables and a few charging outlets apiece, while the Inglewood shop’s lofted couch seating is more conducive to casual morning or afternoon hangs. Powdery beignets and weekend-only waffles round out the café’s food offerings, which are substantial enough for a full-on meal. Locations have plenty of tables and a few charging outlets apiece, but the Inglewood shop’s lofted couch seating are more optimal for casual morning or afternoon hangs.

The food court of this Irvine grocery store serves kebabs and fragrant stews (and also pastas, shawarma and crepes) to a clamoring lunchtime crowd. The market’s true glory, though, is sangak, an Iranian whole-wheat flatbread freckled with sesame seeds; Helou has seen it baked over beds of stones. (Its name translates as “pebbles.”) A line usually forms for the charred, soft-crisp, 4-foot loaves. We draped ours over the front of a shopping cart and ripped off blistering hunks while we wandered the aisles — and we weren’t the only shoppers doing that. Many of the stews we sampled during our trek tasted one-dimensional, but a bowl of ghormeh sabzi (beef, kidney beans and herbs) had a whole dried lime animating the dish with its unique, musky-pungent sourness.

I had a ham and cheese omelette that was out of this world! Please visit the locations link below to choose your store. I was on the lookout for a superlative version of kuku sabzi, an herb-dense egg dish similar to a frittata that’s also a requisite at Nowruz. I didn’t find my ideal, honestly, but the one at Attari came the closest. The kebabs are solid, the donbalan being the front runner. Our soft-spoken, septuagenarian server blushed when we asked him to translate that word; Helou immediately understood it was lamb’s testicles when she saw his embarrassment.

This is Far East Plaza’s stripped-down espresso stop that fuels you with meticulously measured pulls from Drop Coffee Roasters and Sey Coffee beans, and offers a number of creative caffeinated options in a sleek, minimalist setting. Named for the endangered gorilla native to Rwanda and Uganda, this excellent Echo Park café and roaster was founded by Jack Karuletwa, a displaced member of the Tutsi. Today, Karuletwa’s Silverback Coffee now supports small coffee farmers, several rebuilding-oriented nonprofits and wildlife conservation efforts in his home country.

In addition to its noble mission, the café itself is large, airy and full of indoor seating—the perfect Eastside-ish spot for a well-made cup of specialty coffee. Silverback Coffee also features an extensive milk-based drink assortment, an array of sweeter, dessert-like drinks and a food menu of breakfast fare and pastries. This takeaway-oriented neighborhood spot off San Vicente does, in fact, make some damn good coffee. Run by Joshua Mock (of the now-closed Little Amsterdam Coffee), Dam Good Coffee offers a brief, but satisfying menu of espresso-based drinks, hot and iced tea, lemonade and even a few affordably priced toasts and pastries. Add-ons like chaga, a superb dirty chai latte and friendly, efficient staff make this Mid-City café a must-go for locals in the area—and anyone else passing through.

This Leimert Park coffee shop serves toasts, smoothies, coffee and tea, with high-quality beans sourced from the Ethiopian province of Sidamo. It also doubles as an art gallery and community space; you’ll find artwork by new Black artists all over the walls and occasional panels hosting musicians, influencers and other creatives. Next door is Harun Intl, a retail and online shop that sells Harun-branded streetwear, bags of house coffee beans and other items curated by co-owner Chace Johnson, a former music industry executive. With fresh, affordable and healthy food is one of the key goals of South LA Cafe, but that’s only a part of its overall mission. Owned by Celia and Joe-Ward Wallace, the coffee shop serves as a community events space and free grocery distribution hub.

The shop is small, with only a bit of counter space inside, but a spacious and pet-friendly patio makes for a good place to get work done, catch up with friends or make eyes at your neighbor. Street parking can be tough to find, but bike racks abound for two-wheeled commuters. From lavender-flavored lattes to single-origin pour-overs, here are our favorite coffee shops across L.A. The successful product of an online crowdfunding campaign, this cozy Compton-based café and organic coffee roaster sells excellent coffee, tea and vegan pastries, plus a small array of beautiful plants. An eclectic mix of art dots the walls of Patria Coffee, which features a handful of indoor seats and a few patio tables on the grass outside.

Yet the more Helou and I ate, the more distinct every restaurant became. We could discern the precise seasoning of the meats (and lack thereof), or the exact thickness of the yogurt dips, or the hoped-for weightlessness of the rice; exceptional specialties leaped out to us. Restaurant critic Bill Addison pinpoints seven recent reviews, from a carnitas food truck to a tiny Japanese wonder, that illustrate the city’s amazing dining culture.

No matter which location you visit, the beans at Boy & the Bear get roasted three times a week, which makes a major difference in the quality of each cup. All four cafés also have Wi-Fi, charging outlets and at least a few couches, and the Redondo Beach flagship has the most space and outdoor seating. Proudly Black and Latino-owned, this small, fully vegan South L.A. Coffee and retail shop offers a highly curated array of specialty coffee beans sourced from small farms all over the word.

If you live closer to Glendale than to Irvine, this handsomely spare restaurant is your destination for dizi; the version here brings the lamb-rich umami depth, a truth noted in a 2016 review by Jonathan Gold. Some versions age for a decade or more to be spreadable like cheese; this one was young, but its intensity sliced straight through the stew’s meatiness. As a contrast to the stew, sturgeon over dilled rice is terrific in its simplicity. Tehrangeles, as the Westwood-based community has long been nicknamed, began to take shape in the 1960s; it mushroomed with the newcomers who fled Iran in response to the country’s scarring 1979 revolution. The two Attari restaurants reside on a block that received an official designation as “Persian Square” by Los Angeles in 2010, an acknowledgment of how deep the local Iranian American roots have reached.

Part coffee shop, part subscription service, Dayglow is all about showcasing its favorite independent and up-and-coming roasters from around the world. You can find them stashed in the monthly coffee boxes, or drop by either the Silver Lake or West Hollywood locations for a full espresso menu, neon-lit settings and, of course, whatever the daily selection of these faves might be. Expect tonics and canned coffees and bubbly shrub sodas in addition to every classic coffee drink you could want, as well as home equipment, trendy merch and pastries. Tourists and Westsiders might wait in long lines at Intelligentsia up the street, but Silver Lake locals prefer Cafecito, the quieter shop up on Hoover. Here you’ll find less pretension and more privacy, not to mention an ethos that's all about sustainability and social justice.

The Beat haunts of the 1950s and 1960s are hard to find in Venice, but their legacy is not. Today beach-goers encounter aspiring artists displaying their wares and sprawling murals across the walls of local buildings, and they also find skaters, ranging from ages five to fifty, dropping into the bowl. When sauntering down the boardwalk, however, a pedestrian can also pass 7 Dudley Avenue without realizing its importance to the eclectic landscape they see around them. The building, now an upscale restaurant known as Piccolo, used to be home to the Venice West Cafe.

As Cici sees the joy and smiles of her happy customers, her passion grew and she strives to invent more unique dishes for her local customers. Many sensations followed — trending the new best-selling “Green Tea Tiramisu”pancakes, the classic “Dutch Baby” pancakes, and her silky “Chocolate Velvet” pancakes.

At one point during the demonstrations, tensions escalated as protesters refused to relocate and remove their tents and other prohibited items, a university official said. "The university is a private campus and the group had been violating some of their orders. It was a trespass at that point and we assisted with the arrests," Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a briefing. Buttermilk Souffle Pancakes topped with fresh strawberries, lemon sauce, lemon zest & whipped cream. While hoping to serve the same purpose, however, the Venice West Cafe, located at 7 Dudley Avenue, had a unique reason for opening its doors. Complicating the story of the Venice bohemians, Stuart Perkoff, a well-known Beat poet, became repulsed by Lipton who refused to share the "the face of Venice West". A local favorite, Rose Park Roasters has three locations throughout Long Beach.

If ordering from the Fourth Street outlet, take a seat and enjoy the floor-to-ceiling windows and house-made pastries. Find beer and wine by the can or bottle at the Pine Street location. CT, 34 arrests have been made by law enforcement on the UT Austin campus, according to an X post from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The board said it is "urgently working" with Shafik to resolve the unrest on campus and "rebuild the bonds of our community." In an evening update, the Texas Department of Public Safety said that 34 arrests had been made by law enforcement on the campus as of 9 p.m.

Over time, his home and other public spaces became havens for the community's bohemian counterculture which would soon be publicly recognized as "Venice West". While seeking to define this newly evolved Beat Generation, Lipton's 1959 novel The Holy Barbarians brought publicity to the once forgotten neighborhood and introduced "Venice West" to the world. 5 Images throughout his book brought the most attention to Venice Beat hangouts, such as the Gas House and Venice West Cafe. Purchased by former San Franciscan Eric Nord in late 1958, the Gas House at 1501 Ocean Walk was previously a Bingo Parlor that his business partner Al Matthews had hoped to use as an artistic showcase.

While 1950s and 60s Venice may not have mirrored Kinney's exact vision, the beach community's Beat inhabitants became proof that the neighborhood could foster American cultural renaissance. In 2010, the Cultural Heritage Commission of the City of Los Angeles recognized the building at 7 Dudley Avenue to pay tribute to the local coffee shop that inspired the influential Beat Generation. 15 So next time you walk past Piccolo Restaurant along Ocean Front Walk, take a moment to peek at the plaque on the wall. The Venice you see today would not be what it is without the important history of 7 Dudley Avenue. Lawrence Lipton, recognized by many as the Venice movement's leader, had lived in the area prior its popularity but befriended other prominent Beats in his early life as a writer and editor.
